Hounds At Their Heels

Part 7

Silvia went into the bathroom again to grab a washcloth and soaked it in warm water. She checked under the sink for some gauze she could use to wrap up the wounds. When she came back, the boy was yanking out the glass like it didn’t hurt at all.

“Aargh! Gross!” Silvia shouted. “Doesn’t that sting?”

“Not really,” he shrugged.

“How did you even get that much glass in your feet?”

“Would you believe me if I said I had to crush a pendant with my foot to escape a group of killers?”

“You know what, that wouldn’t even be the weirdest thing you’ve said all night,” she huffed, using the elastic on her wrist to tie her hair back. “I’m just going to assume you stepped on a few broken beer bottles back in the alleyway.”

While the boy wrapped up the blood-stained glass using the box of tissues on the nightstand, Silvia took the warm cloth and started wiping the fresh blood off of his feet. When most of the blood was removed, she wrapped the gauze from the heel all the way to where the boy’s toes began. She did the same for the other foot and used medical tape to fasten it.

“Thank you,” he whispered, afraid that if he spoke any louder, he would break the stillness of the room.

Silvia nodded and took the ball of tissue and glass to throw away. She grabbed a pair of sweatpants and a plain black t-shirt close enough to the boy’s size for him to change into. He went into the bathroom and walked out a few minutes later looking better now that he had a change of clothes and his cuts were clean.

“Anyway,” the boy started saying, “what did your dad mean when he asked if you had gone out again? You often out this late?”

Silvia tensed up at the sudden accusation. “So what? They may drink, but I certainly don’t! Also, why does it matter? I’m legally allowed to do it,” she added, avoiding his gaze.

“Whatever,” he sighed. “It’s pretty late anyway, and I’m too tired to figure you out.”

“First off, there’s nothing to figure out, but I guess you can stay the night since those barghests may still be out there. Though if you’re going to be staying over, then I think I’m at least entitled to know your name.”

The boy thought, and after a minute of silence he came to a decision.

“Sebastian,” he said holding out his hand.

“Nice to meet you,” she responded, as she shook Sebastian’s hand. “I’m Silvia, but I guess you already knew that.”

When she withdrew his hand, he gave a big stretch and laid down on the bed. “Well, it’s time for me to get some sleep, so nuapte bună!”

Silvia was left gawking as he watched Sebastian turn onto his side, so his back was facing away from her. It only took a few seconds before his breathing became even, and he was fast asleep.

“How the-” she mumbled to herself, amazed that someone could fall asleep so quickly.

Figuring that he wouldn’t wake up, Silvia rolled him off the bed, and he fell to the floor with a thud. It didn’t come to a great shock that he stayed asleep, and she rolled her eyes at the fact. She took her place on the bed and turned off the lamp, so she could drift off to sleep.
